Artist Statement Objects, in general, are typically valued based on their outward appearance. Having worked in the produce department continuously throwing out vegetables and fruit with minor flaws, like a small bruise, and working with a muralist painting decorative designs and fauve finishes in luxury homes, I recognize how much appearance is stressed in the present day. With the concept of value in mind, I paint objects of no value on highly patterned fabrics to raise their significance and be seen through a new outlook. I use aged, rotting and sprouting vegetables to represent the object. At first glance the work is simply perceived as being ornate, yet once examined the viewer may find areas of the works difficult to read as being painted on or not, making it seem like the vegetables are growing within the designs. Painting directly on the fabric and not being able to erase or paint over errors challenges the attitude of accepting things as they are and attempts to forge a relationship between us, as humans (using cosmetic procedures to change our looks), and the plant world (meant to attract and be consumed), both following the natural process of life: growing, aging and dying. By forcing the viewer to accept what is, I hope to leave them questioning their own ideology of appearance.
