Description This relatively new industrial facility near MIT in Cambridge, MA is known as the William R. Dickson Cogeneration Plant. It represents an architecture in the design of a power plant. The whiteness symbolizes a 'clean industry' approach based on cogeneration energy technology. The striking tower-like smoke stack and rotunda-like structure on the roof provides a way to describe the facility with simple architectural language. In contrast, the image displays a degree of complexity inherent in an industrial facility. Most curious is the 'red box' that stands out despite being just a tiny object. It evokes a sense of mystery for its purpose. It obviously is very important, and maybe some form a alarm switch or shutoff. Additionally, the bold and contemporary design makes for a stark contrast in the old urban-industrial neighborhood of East Cambridge.

Artist Statement I'm a landscape architect with a curious eye for finding beauty and meaning in unexpected places. My portfolio contains many subjects, with an emphasis on landscape and architectural photography. I worked as a landscape architect for many years until I became disabled with a genetic disorder. As a result, I'm using photography as a means of expression, replacing the artistic sensibilities that I once found in my profession of designing landscapes and gardens. My aim is to seek out strong compositions and unique viewpoints of familiar and unfamiliar subjects. My interests range from rural to urban landscape, from modern to historic architecture, from plants to vernacular objects, from a sense of place to a sense of wonder. Ultimately, I hope to encourage others to find the beauty in their environment, and to be curious of the unfamiliar.
