Artist Statement For me, painting is the product of my life experiences. What I am and what I believe and care about is what I put on canvas. My style is hard to define; post, neo or abstract expressionist and although I love non-representational work, my paintings always become a memory, a place I've seen a moment in time where the colors and shapes intrigued me. I have traveled around the world, had the pleasure of growing up in Oregon and lived in Breckenridge Colorado for many years. Those places left a deep impression and the rivers, lakes, ocean, farms, jungles and many other things reappear over and over in my work.
Normally, I paint in a series so in the beginning, I am usually only conscious of that. I always have a general idea of subject and I usually know what I want to say but let the creative process tell me how to say it. Once I have the general theme arranged, then I spend a great deal of time working with technique, making sure the composition is sound. Sometimes after many layers and changes it starts to pull itself together; then I am able to go forward and finish the work. I prefer to work with acrylics, but occasionally return to oils or transparent watercolors. For awards, gallery and exhibition history visit my webpage at www.suenoslergray.com.
